Hydroxyethyl starch (Hetastarch) CAS 9005-27-0 is a widely used artificially synthesized colloidal solution in clinical practice, and is also a natural polysaccharide. Hydroxyethyl starch (HES) is a polymer complex formed by hydroxyethylation of the glucose ring of branched starch in corn or potatoes. Natural starch cannot be used as a plasma substitute because its properties are unstable and easily hydrolyzed by endogenous amylase. After hydroxyethylation, starch can delay its decomposition and elimination in the blood, significantly prolonging its residence time in blood vessels. HES has the effect of expanding blood volume. After 10 minutes of infusion of HES1000ml, the blood volume of healthy volunteers increased by an average of 900ml compared to before infusion, decreased to 415ml after 6 hours, and remained at 285ml after 24 hours.
