    Propanol is a compound in which a hydrogen atom in a propane molecule is replaced by a hydroxyl group. Due to the fact that hydroxyl groups can replace hydrogen on both ends or intermediate carbon atoms of the carbon chain, two isomers, n-propanol and isopropanol, can be generated. The chemical properties of n-propanol are similar to that of ethanol, and it is a byproduct of the synthesis of methanol from carbon monoxide and hydrogen. At room temperature and pressure, it is a colorless and transparent liquid with a fragrance. In industry, it is prepared from ethylene, carbon monoxide, and hydrogen under high pressure and cobalt catalysis. It is synthesized from propylene under the action of sulfuric acid or acetone through catalytic hydrogenation reaction, and is generally used as a solvent. Irritating to the eyes and mucous membranes, inhaling propanol vapor can cause dizziness, headache, vomiting, etc.

    Application

    N-propanol is a good solvent that can be used directly or through the synthesis of propyl acetate in fields such as coatings, printing inks, and daily chemical products. Using n-propanol as raw material, n-propylamine, propyl acetate, propylurea, 2-methyl-2-pentanol, n-bromopropane, perfluoropropionic acid, propyl p-hydroxybenzoate, and propyl nipagin can be synthesized. N-propanol is used in the pharmaceutical industry to produce probenecid, sodium valproate, erythromycin, ammonium propionate, and 2,5-pyridinedioic acid dipropyl ester. The most important derivative of n-propanol is n-propamine, which is mainly used in the production of pesticides such as amphotericin, bendazole, isopropanol, trifluralin, and chlorpyrifos.
