Magnesium hydroxide is a moderately strong base (with a low solubility and weak alkalinity in the solution, sometimes treated as a weak base). It is dehydrated and decomposed when heated to 623K (350 ℃): Mg (OH) 2 → MgO+H2O, easily soluble in acid or ammonium salt solutions. Like magnesium oxide, it is easy to absorb carbon dioxide in the air, gradually forming basic carbonates composed of 5MgO · 4CO2 · xH2O. It decomposes into magnesium oxide and water above 350 ℃, but can only be completely dehydrated above 1800 ℃.
Application
Magnesium hydroxide is an excellent flame retardant for plastic and rubber products. As a flue gas desulfurization agent in terms of environmental protection, it can replace caustic soda and lime as a neutralizer for acidic wastewater. It is also used as an oil additive for corrosion prevention and desulfurization. In addition, it can also be used for refining in the electronics industry, pharmaceuticals, sugar, as insulation materials, and in the manufacturing of other magnesium salt products.
